The whale watching company known as Island Adventures kicked off gray whale season on Saturday March 6, as the vessel named the Island Explorer 3 departed from the Everett Marina behind Anthony’s Homeport, to take a cruise through Port Gardner Bay. The springtime weather could not have been more perfect, as passengers gathered on the sunny upper deck of the boat and others got comfy inside the spacious heated salon. As the boat trolled past Jetty Island, guests got their first glimpse of wildlife, eyeing both a juvenile and mature bald eagle. Sights of interest were pointed out by Bart Rulon, an experienced on-board naturalist and photographer, who strolled the deck with a wireless microphone. California sea lions posed for photo ops as they sunbathed on a buoy, with a cormorant sitting on top.

Jules Anslow has been selected as the 2010 Snohomish County Artist of the Year by the Arts Council of Snohomish County. Join her and the Arts Council at the Artist of the Year Restrospective Show. The Opening Reception takes place Thursday, March 11, from 5–8 p.m. at the historic Monte Cristo Hotel, 1507 Wall St. in downtown Everett. Anslow’s distinctive depictions of faces with exaggerated features, lovable animals, and funky objects cover several mediums including furniture, sculpture, and acrylic paint on wood. Swedish singer songwriter Sofia Talvik from Stockholm made her West Coast premiere performance on Friday night at the Hartley Mansion on Rucker Avenue in Everett. The house concert atmosphere was intimate in the soft-lit 3rd floor recital room of the historic mansion. Karen Pauly, host of KSER’s Nordic Roots & Branches radio show introduced Talvik and her band to the small and enthusiastic crowd of about 35 people. As the Swedish songstress took the stage with her bandmates, she greeted the crowd and mentioned she was happy to be in the Seattle area for the first time and Everett. Joined by an accomplsished three piece band of bass, drums, and guitar, Talvik delivered tasty pop songs and heartfelt ballads.
