Snohomish County’s own Jet City Rollergirls are ranked No. 7 in the West Region, just two spots behind Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls, according to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rankings released today. Being in the top 10 of 22 eligible leagues means Jet City’s all-star team, the Bombers, will be heading to the WFTDA Western Regional tournament in Sacramento, CA, on Oct. 1. Jet City’s first game will be played against long-time rival and tournament host the Sacred City Rollergirls. Jet City Rollergirls is a non-profit organization that could use donors’ support to send its all-star team to the WFTDA Western Regionals for the first time in the league’s history. For information on how to donate, see Jet City’s “Causes” page on Facebook, or visit JetCityRollergirls.com.
In the first quarter of 2010, the Jet City Bombers were ranked by the WFTDA for the first time. They entered the rankings at No. 12 in the West. They defeated the then-No. 8 Tucson Roller Derby (Tucson, AZ) at Edmonds Community College’s Seaview gym on June 26. They were listed as “on the bubble” by Derby News Network in June following their success at the Midwest Brewhaha tournament in Milwaukee, WI. There the Bombers defeated the Arch Rival Roller Girls (St. Louis, MO) in sanctioned play. The Bombers also participated in sanctioned games at the Wild West Showdown, a tournament in Bremerton, WA, where they beat Pacific Roller Derby (Honolulu, HI) and were narrowly defeated by Duke City (Albuquerque, NM).

Saying they’re “only” ranked seventh in their region is maybe not giving Jet City Rollergirls enough credit. WFTDA’s West Region is excruciatingly competitive this year! There’s a pretty good case to be made that the seventh best team in the west could stand up to the #3 or even #2 team in another region.
Jet City has been doing all the right things to keep climbing — traveling a lot, playing teams that are more experienced than they are, training hard. They’ve been fun to follow this year, and while they’re up against an extremely tough pack in the WFTDA Tournaments this fall, all signs point to a bright competitive future!
